In 2010 Te Potiki National Trust established a scholarship in memory of Hawea Vercoe, the principal of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Rotoiti who was tragically killed in November 2009. Funded initially by a donation from McGregor Bailey, and now supported by PricewaterhouseCoopers New Zealand (pwc), the scholarship provides up to two annual cash awards for present or past students of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Rotoiti to assist in furthering their education.
