Whanganui marae is located in Whanganui Bay, on the west side of Lake Taupo, off the Western Bay Road (SH32). The primary hapu is Ngāti Te Maunga of the iwi Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Te Arawa, and the roto Taupo.
