Whakarae marae is located 50 km south of Opotiki, in the Matahi Valley, Te Urewera. The primary hapū is Te Whakatane of Ngāi Tūhoe.
The whare tipuna is named Toi-ki-tehuatahi. Whakarae connects ancestrally to the Mātaatua waka, the maunga Maungapōhatu and the awa Tauranga and Waimana.
