Tangoio marae is located in Tangoio. Its principal hapū are Marangatūhetaua (Ngāti Tū), Ngāi Tātara, Ngāi Te Ruruku ki Tangoio, Ngāti Kurumōkihi (Ngāi Tātara) and Ngāti Tū of Ngāti Kahungunu iwi.
The wharenui is called Pūnanga Te Wao. The marae connects ancestrally to the waka Takitimu, to Maungaharuru mountain, the awa Te Ngarue and the moana Tangitū.
