Ōpaea marae is located just north of Taihape. Its principal hapū is Ngāti Tamakopiri of Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi.
The wharenui is called Tūmakaurangi and the wharekai is Te Puāwaitanga o Ngā Tūmanako. The marae connects ancestrally to the maunga Tongariro and the moana Taupo-nui-a-Tia.
